You see, a mobile device is the closest one can get to a prospective buyer. Literally, everyone has a phone, even those who live in the remotest of locations around the world.
Again, these days, manufacturers have most of their mobile gadgets internet-enabled, meaning it’s hard to get a low-end mobile device that lacks web capabilities.

Some years back, Google did a report called ‘Mobile Path to Purchase’. In this study, they interviewed 950 U.S citizens on how they carry out their daily purchase decisions. The subject of the report covered shopping records in various industries and how consumers accessed this information via mobile. It touched on restaurants, food and cooking, home and gardening, travel, finance and so forth.
It was noted then that 48% begun their web search via mobile, 33% on branded sites, while 26% started their search on branded mobile apps.
Other similar studies have been conducted in the past, and the outcome has always shown an upward trend where mobile usage and internet marketing is concerned.
So, can marketers ignore this fact?
Certainly not. As we speak, Google and Yahoo are just some of the internet marketing giants in the cyber space. They’ve already optimized their ads to fit on mobile screens. They figure out that ignoring mobile users who increasingly access the web through their devices would be like leaving money on the table.
The fact is, mobile marketing converts. In most cases, users have their mobile devices on. This means that if a message is sent across the network, or via email, they should be able to receive notifications instantly. Even when the device is on standby mode, they should be able to receive the message as soon as they turn it on.
Mobile marketing is not as costly compared to using other platforms for marketing. And did you know that designing content for mobile platform is easier and less expensive that when the same content was designed for desktop applications? This is something that majority of internet marketers are not aware of.
Mobile Marketing and Mass Communication
It’s a fact that many people own mobile phones, compared to those who own computers or laptops. Because of this wider market potential, it’s a guarantee that remote markets can now be accessed with great ease. These are prospective consumers who are willing to spend, so long as they are served with the right information.
It’s so easy to fine-tune your message according to the Geo-location of the target user. Through this platform, internet marketers are able to center their messages across a specific locality. They are also able to use GPS and Bluetooth applications to communicate this message.
Micro-blogging advantages to the internet marketer
Long before Facebook and Twitter became a realty, micro-blogging was a dream. People ran their websites like brick and mortar work. There was no way you could market or make posts go viral. In fact, the moment you made information available on the web, you would leave it to the mercies of search engines.
Again, search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing (which rebranded from MSN) didn’t have the advanced mechanisms for crawling and ranking this information. So we’re assuming that this information would be buried somewhere on the web secretly. No one would ever find and read it, except for a few people who would be lucky to come across it by some means.
Micro-blogging has now gone a notch higher with mobile usage. More people are now creating harsh tags for Twitter using their hand-held devices. Statuses are being posted on Facebook, Instagram and many other social platform by the minute, thanks to the intuitive mobile interface that makes it possible to conveniently access these platforms. It’s so easy today.
Individual time spent on mobile devices
And lastly, it’s important to note that more people are spending time on mobile apps than in any other media platform. According to a website called Smart Insights, men and women spent 89% of their media time on mobile apps. Finally, 11% of their time spent on media was dedicated on mobile browsing. This is clearly a gold-mine for businesses looking to capture their share of this dynamic market segment, don’t you think?
